The Magi: Memories

Part 4

Preparing for Battle

(everything is black)

Nanesse: Kain.

Kain: (talking in his sleep) It’s a knife Vincent, of course it’s sharp… (mumble mumble)

Nanesse: It’s morning

Kain: No Roy… Stop poking it…

Nanesse: Guess I’ll have to do this the hard way.

Kain: Hmmm?

(we see through Kain’s eye’s as he opens them and see Nanesse midair, flying towards him.)

Nanesse: MORNING!

Kain: AAAAAHHHHH!

(Nanesse lands on Kain and they both fall off the bed. They lay on the ground, tangled in the blankets. Kain is rubbing his head.)

Kain: (still groggy) Why do you always do that?

Nanesse: Because you never wake up.

Kain: I see... Nanesse?

Nanesse: Yeah?

Kain: Get off me.

(They finally manage to get untangled and Nanesse jumps up on the bed.)

Nanesse: Oh yeah. Gabriella told me to tell you that the old guy told us to meet him at his house in an hour… Yeah.

Kain: Is that why you just tackled me?

Nanesse: Yep! That’s it. (jumps off the bed and runs out of the room) Don’t go back to sleep!

(Kain gets himself untangled and stands up. He re-equips his clothes/weapon/items and leaves the room, mumbling all the way. He comes down the stairs and comes into the dining room. Henry is talking to Katherine at the table.)

Henry: Good morning Master Kain, have you met Katherine?

Kain: (rubs his eye) Briefly

Katherine: Thank you for saving us; I don’t know what we can do to repay you.

Kain: No, we do this kind of thing all the time. (looks around) Where is everybody?

Henry:  Yeah, they cleared out a couple hours ago. I saw your Elf friend a minute ago, she just ran outside.

Kain: Yeah, I saw her too. Well, I’m going to find my group before they do something stupid. (walks towards the front door) Remember what we talked about Henry.

(Kain walks out of the inn. He stops in the doorway and stretches his arms. An apple drops fast, which Kain catches. He looks up at Spike sitting on the roof <2 stories, remember>. Kain wall-kicks up and sits next to Spike. He starts eating the apple.)

Kain: What you got there?

Spike: Fruit basket. The innkeeper insisted that I take it.

Kain: I haven’t seen any fruit trees, where do you suppose they got it?

Spike: I have no idea.

Kain: So you’re on a quest for revenge, huh? How’s that working out for you?

Spike: I take it you don’t approve?

Kain: It won’t bring back your parents.

Spike: That’s not the point. He has to pay for what he did to me.

Kain: What if he has a kid who will some day come after you?

Spike: I’m willing to take that chance.

Kain: Sounds like a lonely life to me.

Spike: Well, having a puppy follow me around doesn’t sound tempting either.

(Nanesse is playing with the kids in the town. She uses a wind spell to make a ball float and the kids clap. She notices Kain and Spike and waves. The ball falls and lands on her head. Kain Waves back.)

Kain: She can be a handful, but I wouldn’t trade her for anything.

(They watch the kids for a little while and eat more fruit)

Kain: Where’s Bruce?

Spike: (points) Weapon shop.

Kain: Not surprised. Gabriella?

Spike: Church.

(pause, eat fruit)

Kain: Are you sure you want to come with us? This could be very dangerous.

Spike: Nobody interrupts my hunt for revenge.

Kain: Meh.

(The elder’s door opens and all the kids stop playing. Nanesse motions them to come down. Kain jumps off the ledge while Spike climbs down. Nanesse runs up to them)

Nanesse: The old man guy wants to talk to all of us.

Kain: Ok, go get Gabriella. We’ll get Bruce.

(Nanesse runs off to get Gabriella. Kain and Spike walk towards the weapon shop)

Spike: Kicking and screaming I’ll bet.

(Kain laughs as they walk into the shop. Nanesse go from the church to the house. Kain and Spike drag Bruce by his arms <with and apple crammed in his mouth> to the house. The Elder is sitting on the hearth, next to a huge sheet covering what looks like mannequins. They sit Bruce in a chair and Spike goes face to face close up.)

Spike: Stay. (sits down)

(the elder stands up in front of them all)

Elder: I have called you all here to ask a question. Are you going to fight?

(everyone nods)

Elder: Are you sure you won’t reconsider?

Spike: I never back down from a challenge.

Kain: Nor do we.

Nanesse: Yep

Gabriella: Me neither.

Bruce: (puts his sword on his lap) Gotta break this badboy in.

Elder: Very well. Since the outcome will decide what happens to our town, you are also fighting for us. Therefore we have prepared a little something for you.

(the elder pulls off the sheet. Underneath are 5 brand new suits of armor, each specially fitted for each person)

Nanesse: (eyes HUGE) For us?

Elder: (nods) Try it on.

(the girls run off to try on their armor, both quite fashionable pieces. The men put their armor on right there, by slipping it over their normal clothes.)

Bruce: (finishes putting his on) Wow, it’s so light!

Elder: Strong too. You will find no better armor anywhere on Terra.

Kain: (brushes shoulder) Impressive.

Spike: I agree.

Bruce: If Spike likes it, then it must be good.

Spike: Didn’t I tell you to sit down?

(Bruce gives Spike a dirty look. The girls come in with their armor on. Sexy stuff)

Nanesse: How do I look? (twirls)

Kain: Very nice.

Gabriella: Yes, very fashionable, but are they strong enough?

Elder: I should hope so, they’re made with Caliburn.

Spike: That’s a Caliburn mine?

Elder: I’m afraid they didn’t choose our mountain for its scenic view. We are the largest producer of Caliburn armor on Terra.

Kain: Regardless. We will fight.

Elder: That’s what I thought. (pulls a map out of a drawer and spreads it out on the table) We shall do everything in our power to assist you. (points to various places on the map) There was a side entrance to the mine, but they destroyed it.

Spike: Doesn’t matter. They know we’re coming; a surprise attack is out of the question.
Elder:  Yes yes, you are probably right. The normal entrance can here. It then leads to the prep room, and the storage room, (looks up) where we keep the materials we don’t need yet.

Kain: How do we get to the top?

Elder: I’m afraid years of mining have turned the mountain into somewhat of a maze, but if you simply follow the trail markings, you should be fine.

Gabriella: What happens if we get separated?

Elder: All the passages actually lead to this one spot. Some are simply faster, but some come to dead ends. In that case, backtrack and try a different route.

Kain: Anything else we need to know?

Elder: I’m sorry, but there’s nothing else I can do for you… Henry will show you the way when you are ready.

Kain: No, you have done more than enough. Thank you. It’s time to move out. Let’s go.

(The group begins to leave)

Elder: Oh, there is one more thing. Come back alive.

Spike: I can’t promise that Bruce will make it, but the rest of us won’t die easily.

Nanesse: Bye mister!

(everyone leaves. They enter the inn. Katherine and Henry are still sitting at the table.)

Kain: Time to go.

Henry: All right. Let’s get cracking.

Katherine: Be careful out there.

Gabriella: (puts her arms around his neck) Don’t worry, I’ll protect him.

Katherine: That’s what I’m afraid of.

Kain: I said let’s go.

Nanesse: Uh oh, he’s getting cranky. Better do what he says.

Kain: That’s it. (picks up Nanesse and throws her over his shoulder) We’re leaving, don’t fall behind. (carries her out the door)

Spike: You heard the man, move your asses. (follows Kain)

Katherine: What a vulgar man.

Gabriella: You know it baby. Come on sport, time to go. (drags Henry out the door)

Bruce: So are you two… You know?
Spike: We’re going to leave without you!!

Bruce: Coming!! Well I guess I’ll see you la-

Spike: Damnit Bruce!

Bruce: For crying out loud, I’m coming! (runs out the door)
